The under 11 (U11) group allows athletes to improve their fitness whilst learning different skills like jumping,
throwing, hurdling, sprinting and stamina. This is done as a mixed group where the emphasis is on the athletes
enjoying the training, having fun and gaining friends.
Once athletes get to around age 11, they will then move to an older group (normally an 11 to 15 years old group),
where the training is more focussed on the event(s) the athlete enjoys and has shown ability in. This could be a
middle distance group, a sprints group or a more multi-events group. This move to the next group is co-ordinated
by the U11 coach.
The aim is for athletes to move to a new training group as a group of friends when the U11 coach (who knows the
athletes best) thinks it is appropriate. Parents should therefore speak to the U11 coach if they think their child
would like to move groups and the U11 coach will speak to the parents if they think the athlete is ready to move
groups. The U11 coach would then speak to the coach or coaches (if there is more than one suitable group) to see
if that new group has availability for new athletes to join.
Training that takes place in the U11 group :-
Stamina with reps around the track or in the park
Sprint training with relays
Throws practice with foam javelins
