BRITISH international 8000m runner Elliott Giles heads a strong entry for the men’s 800m at the fifth and final British Milers’ Club Grand Prix of the season at the Trafford Stadium, Manchester, on Saturday (AUGUST 10^th).

The Birchfield Harrier, who is coached by Jon Bigg, has opted to use the race as part of his build-up towards the UK Championships, incorporating the trials for the World Championships, at the end of the month.

He will start favourite after clocking a season’s best of 1mins 45.03secs at the Diamond League Anniversary Games in London last month, a time that was just 0.04sec shy of his two-years-old PB.

“It is great to have Elliott in the race and there will be some strong opposition for him as well,” said meeting organiser Steve Green.

“We are hoping to go for 1mind 45secs – or even faster – and get close to the stadium record of 1:45.63 set by Andrew Osagie when he won the Grand Prix race in 2011.”

Among those looking to take on Giles will be British indoor 1500m champion Neil Gourlay, who is the next fastest man in the field with a PB of 1:46.19 recorded in America a month ago.

Also entered are Cardiff AC’s Joseph Reid, who set a PB of 1:47.65 at the Watford Grand Prix, City of York junior Alex Botterill (1:47.81) and Brighton Phoenix’s George Mills, who looked impressive winning the 1500m at the Eltham Grand Prix last month.

The women’s 800m field includes Ellie Baker, who has run 2:02.90 this season, Jackie Fairchild, Mhairi Hendry and Irish international Claire Mooney with Hannah England and Amy Griffiths in the 1500m and Jenny Nesbitt in the 5000m.

“We have taken over 300 entries which is around the best ever and the meeting is shaping up to be a cracking night of athletics,” added Green.
