English Schools Fell Champs

Last weekend saw the end of the summer fell race season with the English Schools Fell Champs at Giggleswick, Settle, North Yorkshire. On a tricky course with streams to cross, rocky outcrops and steep grass hills, the rainy weather made the race even more difficult.

Several Trafford athletes were competing for their Schools. First race was the year 7 race and with a controlled run Thomas Daly moved through the field to finish 6th only a minute behind the winner. Daniel White has improved this summer and did well with a determined 38th out of the 57 boys competing.

The year 8/9 field was the biggest field of the day with 82 boys running. Adrian White set off with the leaders and kept the fast pace going to establish a big early lead. Jake Ireland from Macclesfield kept the pressure on and the two runners pulled well clear of the field. Jake closed on Adrian in the tricky downhill but Adrian held on for a 15 second victory. Congratulations to Rafael Cavanagh finishing 81st in his first Fell race.

Next was the year 10/11 boys race and in a high quality field Jay Hutchinson was always in the big group chasing the 2 early leaders eventually finishing 7th. Only a minute further back Evan Lewis had a great run to finish 16th a year young. Another impressive run was from Benji Cavanagh finishing 23rd in his first Fell race.

Last race was the year 12/13 athletes and looking better in ever fell race this summer Joe Daly finished 11th. After several years injured Luke Carrington had a good run finishing 15th.
