English Schools Report



Over 20 Trafford athletes were in action at the 91st English Schools Track and Field Championships in Manchester.
 
Amber Brown was the first Trafford athlete in action and she duly responded by winning the IG Triple Jump with a leap of 11.38m. As well as winning the title, Amber also gained selection for the Schools International (SIAB) in Belfast. Amber still has another year in this age group next year.
 
Another athlete winning gold a year early was Evan Grime in the JB 800m. His winning time of 2:00.19 was a PB and puts him second in the UK rankings.
 
Halle Ferguson was the third athlete to achieve the feat of winning at the bottom end of the age group with a PB equalling 1.78m in the SG High Jump as she won her first senior schools title.
 
In the SB 3000m Bradley Giblin knocked almost 10 seconds off his previous best time as he ran a gutsy race to win the gold medal in 8:24.26.
 
Daniel Akinradewo came third in a high quality SB Triple Jump final. His best jump of 14.78m was just 10cm behind the eventual winner.
 
Ophelia Jones also finished on the podium with a well earned bronze medal after a fine run of 40.74 in the JG 300m.
 
Multi eventer Neve Davenport threw 10.92m to finish 6th in the SG Shot Putt. She later went on to win a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m where she ran the opening leg.
 
Top 8 finishes were also achieved by Cameron Unsworth 4th in SB Shot Putt with 14.72m (PB), Louis Morrison 7th in SB 400mH with 55.86s (PB), Lola Unsworth 7th in the IG Shot Putt with 11.53m and Sophia Roiditis 7th in the IG 1500mSC with 5:20.90 (PB).
 
Other Trafford athletes in action over the weekend were Erin Grime SG 800m (2:15.57 PB), Jonny Stock SB 800m (1:59.23m), Sam Hopkins SB 1500m (4:00.40), Caden Uzoigwe SB Discus (37.29), Sarah Clough IG 800m (2:15.07), Ava Clough IG 1500m (4:45.15), Marissa Caldwell IG 1500m (4:54.34), Matthew Russell IB 800m (2:00.10) and Alfie Simons IB 1500m (4:08.02).
 
Well done to all the athletes involved on their wonderful achievement of being selected and competing so well in the so called "Kids Olympics".
 
Congratulations also to Trafford YDL athletes Hayden Blunn and Sam Danson, who both won their events with personal best performances. Hayden won the IB High Jump with 1.98m to add an amazing 10cm to his previous best. He will join Amber Brown on the plane to Belfast this weekend in the Schools International (SIAB). Sam won the SB Long Jump with 7.13m.
