Manchester League XC - Race 4 - Tatton Park - Report



Great conditions at Tatton Park for the fourth Manchester League x-country meant a big turnout and big queues to get in the park.  The first race was the U11s and Megan Boyer continued her great winter form holding off the pack to once again finish in the top 3 and secured her place as second overall in the league with one race left.  Isabel Gill made an impressive debut to finish seventh out of the 55 strong field.  In the boys race Thomas Aron was one of the late arrivals due to traffic problems but still managed a good 6th place which keeps him in 3rd place overall in the series. Strong runs from Matthew Aron and Thomas Daly meant the team finished 3rd on the day.

 

In the U13 race the close team races continued in the boys event with Liverpool just edging Sale and Trafford. This makes for an exciting final race with Trafford and Sale both battling for the Boys Team title and Trafford and Sale's B Teams both battling for the bronze medals. Individually it was the consistent Ben Keeley who led the Trafford team home and this consistency has moved Ben into 2nd place for the overall series. This time Ben was backed up by Fin Dobson Emmas and Evan Lewis. Pio Aron picked up an injury whilst in the top 3 places but managed to get home to help the B Team. It was great to see the strength in depth of the team with youngster Adrian White in 20th showing his strength and a great run from Oscar Gascoine in 27th.

 

In the girls race the team are starting to show good depth in numbers. Ursula Bailey once again led the team home in 24th place, followed closely by Rachel Bowden in 32nd and new comer Ana Coronado in 41st looks a talent for the future.

 

In the U15 race Trafford's best run of the day came from Freddie Meredith in the boys race. He looked like he had the race under control all the way and moved clear with ease for a 13 second victory. The team packed well behind Freddie with Josh Watson in 16th and Matt Gardner in 18th giving the team a third place on the day.

 

In the girls race it was sisters Sara and Ava Clough who led the team finishing 4th and 8th respectively, with Martha McCormack in 34th completing the team.

 

In the U17 race Freya Griffiths finished an easy 2nd place which secures her 2nd place overall in the series. Cleo Bentall ran well to finish in 15th and has improved in every race this winter.

 

In the boys race Louie McCormack showed he was getting back to form with a strong 5th place, backed up by the strong finishing Will Parker in 6th and Joe Deighton in 11th. This put the team in 2nd place and secures them a top three position in the series.

 

In the Senior woman's race it was two of Trafford's most experienced athletes who turned back the clock to lead the Trafford team. Jo Dawes came home in 9th and Liz Ellyard in 26th. They were backed up by Zoe Storr in 43rd who hobbled the last mile with an injury. Mel Monks completed the team finishing in 61st, the team were 5th team on the day and now look secure in the 3rd place overall in the series. Trafford B Team consisted of Louise Ambler in 76th, Alison Drasdo in 82nd, Ruth Beresford in 93rd and Kate Meeson in 96th, they were 3rd B Team and are now level on points with Chorlton B Team in a battle for the last team medals in the B Team event.

 

Last race of what had been a warm sunny day, was the men's Senior race. Again it was Trafford's experience at the front with Gavin Tomlinson leading the team in 15th place and 2nd V40. Alex Jones in 43rd and Matt Cooper in 45th packed well along with Team Manager Jeff Prest in 48th and 2nd in the V45 age category. After that it was the new youngsters to the team who packed the positions with Laurence Skidmore in 63rd, Michael Melarkey in 73rd and Naeem Stevens in 88th all having good runs. The team were 6th on the day but are still in a relegation fight with Altrincham going into the last match.
