Trafford's junior Fell runners have had a busy start to the season and this Saturday 8 were competting out of 17 athletes for Greater Manchester County team in the annual British Inter-Counties Junior Fell Champs.
Clougha Pike near Lancaster was the venue. Competing in the U9 race Gethin Lewis produced his trade mark finish to claim 16th place. In the U13 race Thomas Fotheringham was 23rd, but his consistancy has moved him up to 14th in this years English Championships.
The U15 event was the first of the inter-counties events and there were 3 Trafford boys all bottom of the age group representing Greater Manchester. With another amazing run Tom Daly finished 2nd leading the Greater Manchester Team to the bronze medals and moving himself to the top of the U15 Boys English Fell Championships. Not far behind in 18th place, with his best run over the Fells, was Ethan O'Brien and in 26th place was Oscar Bundy. In the girls U15 race Isolde Powell finished ahead of many top runners to claim 24th.
In the U17 race Sam Ingleby-Castleton representing Greater Manchester in his first Fell race got carried away following the leaders early on but showed great promise holding on to finish 30th.
In the U19 race Jay Hutchinson had a steady start wanting to build into the race. Last week Jay represented England in the International U18 Mountain champs in Slovakia finishing 1st British runner and 9th overall. Jay pulled through in this race to take the bronze medal and lead the Greater Manchester team to another Team bronze with Evan Lewis 12th and Alfie Bundy 14th. In the girls race Rafaella Ingleby-Castleton enjoyed her race, always staying close to the pack finishing in 16th place.
