17 Trafford Runners at the Inter-Counties x-country

Saturdays Inter-Counties x-country at Wollaton Park, Nottingham at times felt more like a summer 5km road race.  The warm sunny conditions combined with the dry flat conditions (1 hill per lap) meant that several runners wore their road racing shoes. A combination of the heat and the super fast racing meant that several athletes collapsed during the race and at the finish.  Trafford runners were out in force with 17 of them representing their County.

In the boys U13 race Thomas Daly (140th) and Tommy Calland (189th) were dwarfed by some of the runners, both enjoying their first experience of starting the race in pens.

In the U15 Boys race Adrian White (19th) used his track speed to stay close to the lead group with the top few only pulling away in the last 800m.  Ralphie Rome (166th) representing Greater Manchester for the first time ending up an impressive 3rd place in the team.

In the U17 Women’s race Rachel Bowden (114th) is becoming a regular in the Greater Manchester team and ran well to be 4th counter in the team.  In the U17 Men’s race Pio Aron (15th) recovered from a twisted ankle in the hilly National x-country and showed great form over the fast course as he pushed to make the top 10, only slipping back up the final hill.  Jay Hutchinson (53rd) found the pace too fast but combined with Jack Marwood (Salford) in 11th and Fin Goddard (Sale) 48th the Greater Manchester team just missed medals in 4th place.  Tio Austin (148th) showed he is continuing to return to form and Thomas Harris (281st) ran well for Cheshire.

In the U20 race best run of the day came from Ava Clough, after the fast start Ava moved up to 11th place and after being challenged later on in the race she moved clear to claim 11th place.  Also continuing to improve was Issy Pearson (77th) who finished 3rd Greater Manchester runner and helped the team to finish 8th overall.  In the U20 Men’s race Trafford had 3 of the Greater Manchester team.  Josh Watson (70th), Luke Carrington (130th) and Dan Partington (152nd).

Trafford’s only medal winner of the day was Beth Reid (61st) who was part of the Lancashire Senior Women’s team who won the Team bronze medals.
