Trafford Retain Northern x-country title

After Fridays storm everyone was surprised at what a lovely day Saturday's Northern x-country had at the picturesque Tatton Park.  The course was dry and relatively flat meaning the races were run at a fast pace.

It was an early 11am start for the U17 Women with Rachel Bowden hanging on to the fast pace to finish 35th, close behind were Isobel Thomas (53rd) and Rafaella Ingleby-Castleton (83rd).  Next race was the U17 Men’s race over a slightly longer 5.8km course.  The race set off at a blistering pace and soon spread out with Trafford’s Pio Aron in the lead group, Jay Hutchinson in the second group and Tio Austin and Fin Dobson Emmas in a third group.  Pio, one of the youngest in the field held on to finish 6th and with a big sprint finish Jay came through to 8th.  Tio (18th) and Fin (26th), recovering from illness and injury still had enough to make sure Trafford retained the U17 Men’s Team title 35 points ahead of Preston.  Close behind in a quality field was Evan Lewis (31st), Ben Keeley (34th), Tim Ye (45th), Archie Greenwood (46th), Tom Harris (87th) and Ceri Basi (95th), meaning that Trafford’s ‘B’ Team were good enough to finish 5th overall.

In the U13 Boys race Thomas Daly (33rd) and Ethan O’Brien (48th) were always close to the lead pack and with good packing from Daniel White (84th), Thomas Fotheringham (87th), Paddy Widdop (98th) and Joe Bowden (120th) the team finished 10th overall.

In the U15 Girls race Sarah Smith had a fast finish to move up to 74th and was backed up by Beth Stanley (100th) and Genny Jackson (125th).  The U15 Boys race saw a group of 5 break clear including Trafford’s Adrian White.  By half way the fast pace had reduced the lead group to 4 and then with 800m to go only 3 were left.  With all 3 sprinting to the line Adrian claimed a brilliant 2nd place.  Ben Gardner (16th) had a great run and with Ralphie Rome (35th) and Arlo Mander-Tullius coming through the field to finish 48th, the team picked up the Bronze medal.

In the U20 Men’s 7.9km race the Trafford runners packed well finishing 5th team only 18 points off a medal.  Once again it was Durham Universities Will Parker (23rd) who lead the Trafford Team.  Close behind in 25th with his best ever x-country race was Joe Deighton.  Josh Watson (who won last week’s South East Lancs Senior Men’s x-country) was 32nd and also with one of his best runs for a couple of years was Luke Carrington in 45th.  They were followed by youngsters Toby Robinson (54th) and Dan Partington (60th).

In the Senior women’s race over the same 7.9km course Beth Reid made a great return to form after struggling for a year with low iron levels.  She was always up near the lead group finishing 14th.  Vicki O’Meara ran well after a recent illness coming through to 39th, Amelia Williams was 42nd and Jaz Maddocks was 49th meaning the Trafford team were 5th overall only just behind 4th place Preston.  The top four were backed up with good runs from Kate Meeson (54th), Amy Cauley (99th) and Mel Monks (140th).

In the senior men’s race over an 11.75km course Seb Patrick had a breakthrough race making the top 50 for the first time as he lead the Trafford team home in 47th place.  He was backed up by Mike Melarkey (97th), Simon O’Meara (108th), Jeff Prest (164th), Laurence Skidmore (171st), John Howe (244th) and Jacob Fletcher (287th).
