Trafford Women win Northern XC Relay

It rained overnight on Friday but this year the annual Northern x-country relays in Sheffield were not cancelled due to flooding.  As the day progressed the weather got better and so did the Trafford performances, with the Trafford Senior Women’s team winning for the first time.  Ava Clough (12.18) set the team off recording the 5th fastest time of the day finishing close to the top 3 in 4th place.  Beth Reid (13.14) then came through the field also recording the 4th fastest time on leg 2 to edge Trafford into the lead.  Sara Clough (12.19) pulled away to give Trafford a 20 second win recording the 2nd fastest time on leg 3 and 5th fastest overall on the day.  Trafford’s ‘B’ team were also at the front of the field with Kate Meeson (13.32), Amy Cauley (14.37) and Ruth Beresford (15.36) just missing out on 1st ‘B’ team finishing 16th team overall.

In the Men’s race a mainly junior team from Trafford showed great promise finishing 12th overall, Joe Deighton leading the team off with 11.10, Joe Daly is enjoying life in Sheffield (he has started uni there) and clocked 11.21 on leg 2 and the team was completed by Luke Carrington (12.20) and Jeff Prest (11.46).  Well done to Jacob Fletcher (13.22) in Trafford’s ‘B’ team.

In the U17 Men’s race the short fast course meant there were close battles for Trafford teams.  As the race set off favourites Salford and Trafford were in the lead pack, but a great run from Salford’s Bobby Burton kept them ahead of Trafford with Tio Austin (7.17) finishing 8th.  Pio Aron (7.05) then made his charge through the field handing over to Fin Dobson Emmas in joint 2nd just 4 seconds down on Salford.  With Salford’s Evan Grime running away from the field to record the fastest leg of the day (6.52) and third fastest ever on the course, Fin settled for making sure of the silver medals outsprinting Blackburn recording 7.17.  With bronze medals up for grabs for first ‘B’ team it was again Trafford versus Blackburn.  Evan Lewis (7.38) finished 15th overall on first leg just ahead of Blackburn ‘B’ team.  Ben Keeley (7.39) moved the team up to 10th place overall still with a 50m lead of Blackburn ‘B’ team.  Jay Hutchinson held the lad and position before pulling away in the second half to give Trafford 1st ‘B’ team and 10th place overall.  Showing the strength in depth Trafford also had 1st ‘C’ team Oscar Gascoine (8.12), Rowan Leeming (7.48) and Finnan Docherty (8.42) as well as Atticus Jones (9.12) in the ‘D’ team.  In the women’s U17 race Trafford just had one team with Rachel Bowden (8.52) finishing 9th on a high quality first leg.  Ursula Bailey (10.00) and Sophie Bowman (10.23) brought the team home in 13th place.

In the U15 age group the Trafford girl’s team of Zoe Placzkiewicz (9.46), Ianthe Jones (9.31) and Ava Evans (10.26) performed well at this high level finishing 23rd team.  Unfortunately for the boy’s team an injury whilst warming up meant they didn’t finish a team but that doesn’t detract from great runs by Ben Gardner (7.24) and Joe Cowles (8.30).  In the u13 Boys race Trafford had two good team all running similar times within each tea, Mathew Aron (6.06) leading off the ‘A’ team in 15th place, followed by Ethan O’Brien (6.07) moving up to 13th and Thomas Daly (5.52) getting the team into the top 10.  The ‘B’ team lead by Sammy Cowles (6.43) the Thomas Fotheringham (6.29) overtook 7 places and Joe Bowden (6.40) brought the team home in 22nd place overall.
