Trafford XC Team Continues to Rise in National XC Relays

ECCA National XC Relays, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield, 6th November

The National XC relays took place on Saturday at the traditional Mansfield course.

There was a superb standard of racing; with the short distances and the condensed course adding to the atmosphere over the tight wooded sections and playing fields.

First leg times are on a slightly shorter lap due to the start position.

Following an excellent performance across the board the Trafford squad again stepped up to the plate, with strong performances across the age-groups.

The senior women’s race was over 3km; the team was led by Vicki Cronin (10.58) followed by Sophie Ralston (12.38) and Mel Monks (12.26) finishing in 45th.  The ‘B’ Team was led off well by Kate Meeson (12.54) and backed up by Ruth Beresford (13.18) and Sue Exon (16.26).

In the Senior mens 5km race, Matt Cooper (17.38) made his way through to finish in the top half of the field, Alex Jones (18.21), Laurence Skidmore (18.12) and Jeff Prest (18.28) moved them up to 69th at the end. Jacob Fletcher (21.00) and Alastair Knockton (22.33) competed in the ‘B’ team.

The U13 boys team had the most exciting race over the 2km distance.  Pio Aron (6.58) led the team on leg one with a fast start he held on to finish 2nd place and the 6th fastest time overall. Evan Lewis (7.35) then moved through to lead the race with 80 of the best teams in the country chasing him.  Evan also held on to 2nd place at the finish.  Fin Dobson Emmas (7.36) equalled Evan’s time on last leg.  The team finishing 5th overall, 2nd Northern team and only 30 seconds behind the fastest team.

Trafford’s B Team were led by Adrian White (8.14) and Evan Horwell (8.20) running similar times and with Atticus Jones (9.02) in one of his first races keeping the team in 9th ‘B’ team and 2nd Northern ‘B’ Team overall.

In the U15 boys race (also 2km) Freddie Meredith (6.48) got boxed in early on but fought through well to record the teams fastest time.  Luke Carrington (7.25) and then Charlie Stanway (6.59) kept the team in 16th place and 4th Northern team.

Trafford again finished a ‘B’ team with all the runners Jay Hutchinson (7.34), James Walton (7.32) and Jamie Anderton (8.56), running well.

In the U17 boys Louie McCormack (9.51) and Will Parker (9.41) had a close battle.  Will Stanway (10.03) had another consistent run, but it was James Knockton (9.07) who moved through on the last leg to return the 4th fastest time of the day to move the team up to 14th.

Ned Silvey (10.29) and Joe Deighton (10.10) backed Will Parker up to keep the ‘B’ team in 8th place overall and 2nd Northern ‘B’ team.  Jack Haworth (10.23) and Joe Daly (11.11) also showed they are improving.

With good team finishing positions in the 3 boys events (5th, 16th and 14th) this gave a boys aggregate score of 35, making us the 4th most successful team.

1. Cambridge & Coleridge 19
2. Liverpool 32
3. Blackheath & Bromley 35
4. Trafford 35

In the girls races the U13 girls also raced of a 2km distance.  Ursula Bailey (8.05) had a strong start and this helped her to a fast time and 32nd on first leg.  She was backed up with good runs from Ava Evans (9.08) and Samrawit Tekle (9.03) with the team finishing 38th.

The U15 girls were led by Isobel Thomas (8.11) with Martha McCormack (8.37) and Ophelia Jones (8.52) finishing in 54th place.  Sophie Bowman (9.09) and Betel Menghis (10.09) backed up well in the ‘B’ team.

In the women’s U17 2.5km race Freya Griffiths (9.49) and Cleo Bentall (11.13) competed well. Over the same distance Jessica Spilsbury in the U20 women’s race opened up her winter season, running for Loughborough University  with a strong 8.56 run finishing 7th on the first leg.
