Big Turnout for Club Reunion
Over seventy members, past & present, attended the club`s first ever reunion last Saturday evening in this, the club`s 53rd year of existence.
It took place in the clubhouse function room which some athletes had not seen before as they were last at the club in the early 70s.
No other club in the country will have it`s history so comprehensively covered with over forty scrapbooks on display and they were hugely popular on the night.
There were rounds of applause for the club`s founder Bill Murphy and for Roger Colson, instigator in 1965 of the Tuesday night Stretford Track & Field League, the forerunner of the Trafford Grand Prix.
Also present were Dave Grindley, who designed the club logo, and our two Olympic Medallists, Shirley Holloway ( Strong ) and Sandra Wright ( Douglas ) as well as numerous other international medallists and internationals.
Also present were several members from the early 60s who were part of the club`s forerunner, Cheadle & Gatley Harriers.
And it was the distance boys from that national medal-winning team of the eighties ( and Team Managers Neil Canham & Malcolm Warburton ) who still had the stamina to keep the bar open until the early hours.
The next one ? How about the club`s 55th anniversary in 2019/20 ? Watch this space!
