Trafford Youngsters Impress at National Cross-Country Relays, Leeds Abbey Dash and Parkrun

Weekend round up
Trafford young distance athletes were active in various events over the weekend.

The final relays event of the season was the National Cross Country Relays at Mansfield last Saturday.
The top performance came from the Under 15 Boys team. After Joe Bentall had won the opening leg, the other 2 runners, Joe Mangan and Alex Bailey, managed to bring the team home in 11th place out of 106 teams. Joe Bentall's time was the 3rd fastest in the entire race, beaten only by 2 international athletes. The Under 15 'B' Team of Seb Patrick, Jonny Stock and Theo Symons Treacher finished 60th.

Also performing well were the Trafford Under 20 Men's team. Mac O'Malley, Jay Ferns and Matt Sutton combined to finish in 14th place out of 49 teams.

The Under 17 Men's team ran consistently well. After an excellent first leg by Xav O'Hare, Connor Fazakerley and Cynog Wiliams combined to bring the team home in 29th place.

It was encouraging to see Trafford fielding an Under 13 Girls team at this level of event. Neve & Imogen Davenport and Cleo Bentall will have gained valuable experience in finishing 88th team.

Several of the young athletes were in action again the following day at the Abbey Dash 10k in Leeds. Danny Lawton (31.11), Jay Ferns (31.15), Mac O'Malley (32.41) and Matt Sutton (33.54) all produced personal bests in a very high standard race. Three of our Under 17s also made their 10k debuts in this event. Xav O'Hare's time of 33.38 ranks him 5th fastest in the UK this year. Encouraging performance were also made by Connor Fazakerley (36.00) and Jack Wilkinson (36.13).

There were further personal bests at the Stretford parkrun 5k. Charlie Atkiss (19.50), Ben Solomon (22.07), Austin Smith (22.22) and Callum Millard (22.28) all proved that there are plenty more promising Trafford athletes coming up through the ranks.

Next Saturday sees the 2nd Manchester Cross Country League fixture at Boggart Hole Clough.
