Greater Manchester Junior Cross-Country Report
Many of Trafford's young middle distance athletes began their year by racing in the annual Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships at Heaton Park. An added incentive was to gain places in the Greater Manchester Team to compete in the Inter Counties Championships at Loughborough in March. As a result, 8 Trafford athletes are now in line for county selection, with 2 others as reserves.
Pride of place goes to Mac O'Malley who looks like he will be continuing his excellent progress into 2018.
He convincingly won the Under 20 Mens race by a margin of 14 seconds.
The Under 17 Mens team retained their team title, which they have now won 8 times in the last 10 years. Led home by Cynog Williams in an impressive 2nd place, the team was backed up by Harry Sinclair 5th, Jack Wilkinson 6th and Ben Wolstencroft 15th. Jack becomes the first Trafford athlete ever to gain County selection for 6 successive years.
Not to be outdone, the Under 15 Boys won their team award for the 3rd time in 4 years. Excellent packing by Joe Bentall (3rd), Joe Mangan (4th), Theo Symons Treacher (5th) and Alex Bailey (7th) saw them easily win the team race. This performance was ample reward for the hard work they all put in at a gruelling training camp in Snowdonia during the Christmas holidays. Tom Bentall, suffering from an injury he sustained when he fell off his bike on ice on the way to training, also managed to finish the race in 29th position.
The Under 13 Boys team had a solid performance to finish as 3rd A Team. Returning form injury, Louie McCormack finished in 11th place, closely followed by a much-improved Charlie Massey in 15th. Solid runs from Joseph Daly (30th) and Charlie Atkiss (34th) promises well for the future.
It was great to see 9 Trafford girls also taking part in these Championships.
Anna Baker was her usual reliable self and finished 10th in the Under 17 category, making her a reserve for the county team.
Rebecca Young (38th) and Sinead O'Driscoll (39th) ran well to finish the tough, hilly Under 15 Girls race.
Encouragingly, 6 Trafford athletes completed the Under 13 Girls race, giving them 7th team place. Led home impressively by Neve Davenport (19th) and Lila Wainwright (23rd), they were followed by Marina Guardascione (28th), Cleo Bentall (31st), Alex Sinclair (46th) and Imogen Davenport (50th).
The season continues with the 4th round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League at Woodbank Park, Stockport on Saturday.
